ULLOOR S PARAMESWARA IYER(1877-1949)
Ulloor was the first in the 20th century to open up a historical sensibility in Malayalam poetry. He started his poetic career under the influence of Kerala Varma Valiya Koyithampuran. He was the one to write a mahakavya in Malayalam choosing a theme from the history of Travancore. Apart from Umakeralam, the mahakavya, he has written several short narratives or khandakavyas. Karnabhooshanam and Pingala are the most famous among these. A classicist approach to the themes can be seen in his poems. Although he had a deep rooted classicist poetic vision, he has also written poems having the character of lullabies. Rich in ornamentation, his poems reflect a deep philosophical inner tone. He was highly educated and was a scholar who produced valuable knowledge in the field of history, art and language. His Kerala Sahitya Charitram in 7 volumes is regarded as the best in its genre in Malayalam language. His books include, Vancheesageethi, Oru Nercha, Mangalamanjari, Karnabhooshanam, Pingala, Chitrasala, Chitrodayam, Kavyachandrika, Kiranavali, Manimanjusha, Ratnamala, Amruthadhara etc. Premasangeetham is from the collection, Manimanjusha.
